Dubrovnik Continued...

Our time in Dubrovnik was great because the town was a lot of fun and it was a great place to ease into our travels. After a hectic and hot hike through the walled in old town we found our place at the top of 100 stairs in a neighborhood overlooking the harbour. The main problem with staying in private accommodation is that reception is not open 24 hours, and in this case, not ever open, or even a phone call away. After waiting at the top of the stairs with our bags for a couple of hours we made it into rooms Duje (doo-yay) where we discovered a nice spacious room and bed with only 15 pictures of Jesus on the cross looking down at us and an antique calendar from 2002. The best part about the accommodation was that it was in a cat infested neighborhood and far from being the blood thirsty, tourist-feasting cats we were expecting they were super friendly and Geoff wanted to save one in his backpack.

The main attraction in Dubrovnik is the old city walls. The view from atop the walls is simply amazing and we enjoyed it with a bottle of wine smartly purchased from the grocery store. A tip for the informed traveller: visit the wall close to closing time because you can enjoy the sunset from the towers and won't have to contend with as many of the endless hordes of tourists that pack into Dubrovnik.

Geoff and DeeDee at the top of the wall

Another highlight of our trip was having a drink at a bar nestled on the rocks between the wall and the sea. Listening to the waves crash on the rocks and drinking a cold beer was the perfect way to end our day of beaching and sight-seeing.

Here you can see the aftermath of a crazy insect sting that DeeDee got on our first day of walking around. As of press time her foot is still pretty swollen, meaning that the swelling hasn't gone down for almost a week (just fyi we've been treating DeeDee's foot with alergy pills and antihistamine gel, but any other advise would be welcomed). But, undeterred we press on to Korcula (kor-choo-la) for bigger and better things...

Nasty sting, DeeDee. Do you have any idea what stung you?
If you can find some Epsom Salts you could try soaking your foot in warm water with, I don't know, a half cup of the salts.
I have no idea what the word for it would be in Croatian. Technically it's Magnesium Sulfate.
Love,
B

Congrats!I was wondering if this was going to be an extra specialk trip! Now for more practical stuff I know this works for bee and wasp stings but I don't know if it works so long after the initial sting but slicing an onion and taping it directly on the spot for at least an hour does something to neutralize the venom and make the reaction much less severe. I know sounds a little wacky but I swear from personal experience it works - hardly any swelling, no itching. Also take motrin (ibuprofin) - it's an anti-inflamitory,may work to speed up your healing time.

Good thoughts from Barbara and tmb. Also made me think of the old 60 Acres soccer field days and how we used meat tenderizer powder mixed with a little saliva...maybe too little too late but I bet you remember those days.

I don't know if your foot is still swollen from the insect sting, but sometimes soaking a sting in bleach water will bring the swelling down. My grandmother did that for my sister when she was little and was stung by a bee. Again, I'm not sure if this helps long after the sting or if it just helps initially.

Change the phd by soaking your foot on white vinegar... I have something similar on my toe, and it has been working - slow, but the pain and itchiness is gone.

I went to Dubrovnik last August and loved it. Friendly locals, good food, LOTS OF STAIRS. We went roaming through the streets, which feels a bit like a movie set. And we came across this fountain, outside somebody's front door: An almost life-sized naked woman, sitting in a chair, holding open her legs. And, as I said, it was a fountain . . .
